The difference between dirt and pit bikes

Dirt and pit bikes are an increasingly popular choice here at Fun Bikes and they are incredibly fun to ride. However, even though there doesn’t look like there is a big difference between the two types of bikes there most certainly is.

Both the pit and the dirt bike share similar qualities such as aesthetics, parts, functions and uses but it’s all in the detail that separate these two types of bikes.

For starters, the pit bike has a renowned history for being the go to bike when traveling around circuits and motor pits. This required the bike to be smaller in build, be fitted with smaller tires and reach lower speeds in comparison to the traditional dirt bike. In basic terms, the pit bike is a smaller version of the dirt bike.

However, dirt bikes have a larger speed range. At Fun Bikes we stock a great selection of Dirt bikes that range from 50cc to a staggering 250cc. The KDX 250R is the fastest dirt bike that we stock and it can hit an impressive 70MPH.

The speed that dirt bikes can reach encourages the more experienced driver to invest in that product rather than a pit bike. The speed range of our stock of pit bikes varies from 90cc to 160cc which eases the inexperienced rider into the thrill of riding a bike.

So how do you decide which bike is for? Each bike is specifically built for a purpose, it’s just finding what qualities you need when purchasing a bike. One of the main aspects to consider when buying is what experience of riding do you possess. If you are fairly comfortable with riding a bike then a dirt bike is for you, if not then the purchase of a pit bike which is smaller might be advised. Budget is also a contributing factor although running costs are low for all bike types.

We would love to hear from you so if you have any stories, questions or advice on any of these bikes, please get in touch and leave your comments below. For advice on any aspect of bikes, scooters or quads, please get in touch and we will do our best to help you.
