Electric Bicycles- A Safety guide

Taking precautions is one of the most important things you can do with electrical bicycles. Electrical bikes or e-bikes as they are more commonly known are faster than regular bikes and have far better acceleration. People often miss-judge this power and as a result end up injuring themselves.

So as soon you have bought your e-bike, it vital you go over some safety precautions:


- First off, Test your e-bike in an area with no pedestrians in order to get familiar with its behaviour under different situations.

- Wear a helmet (especially in unfriendly bicycle cities) and wear it correctly even when you are going for "just" a short drive. Make sure the helmet is fitted to your head.

- Make sure that you are visible enough. Wear glowing accessories, a reflective vest, put reflectors on the front, rear and on the side of the e-bike.

- Use lights when travelling in the dark . You may be fined £30 if you don't have them.

- Avoid clothes that can be caught up in the bike chain or wheel.

- Don't ride on dirt roads with an electric bicycle which is not designed to travel in such conditions

- Check the tire pressure, cracks and cuts.

- Check for loose spokes to avoid wheels wobbling.

- Check handlebar and headset are tighten

- Obey all traffic signals

- Don't ride between parked cars and the road.

- Learn how to signal with your hands - especially if you are riding on the road: bicycle-hand-signals

- Be aware that there are blind spots around large vehicles.

- Pay attention to what's going on around you and what other road users might do.

- Make eye contact with drivers so you are sure they have seen you.

- Consider mudguards, waterproof trousers and shoe covers in wet weather.

- Regularly clean and oil your bike chain to keep your bike running smoothly and remember to check your     brakes and tyres.

Quad Bikes for Christmas - Have fun but be Safe!

Many kids and even adults may be hinting at a quad bike this Christmas, and who can blame them they are great fun. However, while quad bikes are fun it is important to remember to ride safely and responsibly.

There are currently no safety regulations in place governing the use of protective clothing with quad bikes and there is no requirement for training.

One regulation that is in place is where you can use quad bikes. Quad bikes can be used off road on private land with the permission of the landowner. Most standard quads come with off road tyres, which mean they are not suitable for road use. It is also illegal to ride quads on public roads if you are under the age of 16.

The law states that quad bikes can only be used on public roads if you:

• Are over 16 years of age
• Wear an approved helmet
• Have road tax
• Have a driving license to use a moped (16 years old) or motorcycle (17 years old)
• Have insurance
• Take a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
• Ensure the bike has lights, a number plate, horn, speedometer and sufficient tread on the tyres (I.e. road legal tyres)
• Have an MOT if the bike is over three years old.

Other good safety features on many quads include throttle restrictors, enclosed foot wells and safety tethers, though they are more specific to kid’s quad bikes.

You may have seen in the news that Kate Moss has been criticised for having three people on one quad bike. Quad bikes are not designed for people to ride pillion. So we recommend you take turns or buy a quad bike suitable to the individuals’ abilities.
